Traveling alone for the very first time is so exciting. It’s an opportunity to spread your wings, and go on the adventure of a lifetime. However, along with the excitement and exhilarating pride also comes a considerable amount of nerves. After all, you’re going to an entirely new destination where you’re your own captain and host.
All of the responsibility falls under your back, which can be very stressful, putting a lot of pressure on you. Not to mention, it can be frightening at times. However, travel doesn’t have to be scary, or even intimidating. Whether you’ll be sleeping on a sofa, or staying in a hotel, here are some tips you’ll want to know.
Research Your Destination
Before you go, it’s helpful to do a little research. Get to know where the hot spots are, and what the customs and local norms are. Some places will be more rigid than others, so it’s important to know this. Failing to respect the culture of where you’re going couldn’t just lead to offending the locals, but it can also ruin your trip.
It’s important that you’re mindful of knowing a few phrases as well. Get to know basic terms like how to ask for directions, or how to say “please” and “thank you,” and above all, learn how to get around. Whether you’ll be taking public transportation or getting a taxi, learn how these things work before you set off on your journey.
Pack Lightly
Traveling solo means you’re the one that’s going to have to haul around your luggage. So, do yourself a favor and don’t over pack. It is incredibly burdensome to have to haul around a fifty pound bag from place to place, particularly if you’re planning on changing locations of your times. Stick to versatile items that can be worn in a few different ways.
Perhaps most importantly is being mindful of the shoes you pack. Shoes are one of the heaviest things that we can put in our suitcase, so ideally, you should only bring one or two pairs. This won’t just save you additional stress, but it can even save you money since overpacking can lead to excess baggage fees.
Trust Your Gut
In the world of travel, there’s nothing more valuable than your own gut. If something feels off, then chances are it probably is. Stay aware of your surroundings, and always listen to your instincts. Avoid areas that seem risky, especially at night, and always be cautious when interacting with strangers. Some places are known for being riskier than others for pickpockets, so get to know if you’re in one of those places and stay vigilant!
